    Joseph Philias Laurin
    • Joseph Philias Laurin
      Buisnessman

Born in Ottawa on 20 March 1881, Joseph Philias Laurin studied at École Brébeuf. He spent fifty years making funeral monuments and statues. The firm J. Laurin & Son, established in 1900, was the largest monument manufacturer in Ottawa. For fifteen years, he was his company's salesman in Montreal. In the 1910's , J. P.Laurin succeeded his father, Joseph Laurin (1854-1919), as head of the business, which was located at 95 George Street, and later 213 York Street at the corner of King Edward. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVPS) for over twenty-five years, and a member of the Ste. Anne council, chairing its "conseil Saint-Louis" for more than fifteen years, and then assuming the presidency of the SVPS itself. During the 1910's he was director for three years of Ottawa's Le Droit newspaper. Laurin was an intimate friend of the famous Brother André, of Montreal, and when the clergy man travelled to Ottawa, he always stayed at the Laurin household. In 1942 J. P. Laurin & Co. was responsible for the rection of the Archbishop J. T. Duhamel statue in front of Notre dame Basilica as well as the tombs of three former Ottawa archbishops placed in the basement crypt. In1948, he was appointed knight of the Order of st. Sylvester for numerous services that he rendered to the Catholic Church. Married to (1) Éva Lecavalier (1884-1933) and to (2) Germaine Lecavalier (1903-1978), he was 69 years old when he died in Ottawa on 21 February 1951.
