    • Royal Galipeau (01/05/1947 - 01/27/2018)

GALIPEAU, Royal passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 27, 2018, of complications from multiple myeloma. The former Conservative MP for Ottawa-Orléans was 71. He is survived by his wife Anne Pallascio, children Louis (Laurel Monkman), Paul, Claude and Miriam and grandchildren Oona and Lila Galipeau. Son of the late René Galipeau, he also leaves his mother, Anna Lacasse, and siblings Lise, Benoît, Lucie, Claire and Agathe. He was predeceased by his brother Louis-Henri.

Royal's life was devoted to public service. Early in his career, he was twice appointed by former Ontario Premier Bill Davis to the Board of the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (TVO), where he was TVO board representative on the implementation committee of the Ontario French-language Educational Communications Authority (TFO). A member of Gloucester City Council from 1982 to 1985, he was a member of the Ottawa'96Carleton Regional Transportation and Works Policy Committee, where he promoted the development of light-rail transit (LRT) 30 years before its approval. After leaving office, he was lauded by The Ottawa Citizen as council's "most dynamic and creative member". He also served two terms as trustee and vice-chair of the Ottawa Public Library, championing the installation of filters on children's library computers to protect them from Internet pornography. Next came federal politics and successive elections to the 39th, 40th, and 41st Parliaments of Canada (3,556 days) as Conservative MP for Ottawa-Orléans. During his tenure as an MP, he was the federal government representative for the development of the Ottawa LRT project and the proud sponsor of the private member's bill creating Canada's National Tree Day, passed by Parliament in March 2011. He also was a tireless advocate for the clean up of the Ottawa River.

Many thanks to family, friends and health care professionals for their kind support during challenging times. Royal expressed the wish that those who want to remember his life plant a tree or participate in a park or river bank cleanup. Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
