While the first use was as a grocery store, by 1901, Joseph O. Charlebois was operating as an ice dealer and hotel keeper on this corner. From its early days, this brick building
was a significant presence on both streets. Between 1930 and 1960, the Canadian National Bank occupied the building with its diagonal corner entrance. The building, heavily damaged during a 1977 fire at the nearby Lasalle Hotel, has lost its original mansard roof.

Passed away surrounded by his family on May 30, 2017 at the Perley and Rideau at the age of 80. Son of the late Edgar Whissell and the late Gilberte Cloutier and the beloved husband of the late Charline Miller. Loving father of Sherry (Brian) and Claudette (André), cherished grandfather of Justin (Marly) and Arianne and great-grandfather of Emmitt and Arthur. Dear brother of Claudette (late Rhéal) and Francine. He also leaves many nephews, nieces and friends. He was also predeceased by his siblings Robert, Denise, Raymond and Gilles. The family would like to thank the Perley and Rideau Ottawa 1 West team and volunteers for their dedicated support and care of our father. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Tuesday June 6, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home Chapel (180 Montreal Road, Ottawa). The family will receive condolences from 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

WILFRID MATHIEU, athlete, speed skating
Inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, May 31, 2019
A Lowertown son! Wilfrid Mathieu lived at 259 King Edward, 173 Cumberland and Cathcart Streets. He married a Lowertown girl, Germaine Raizenne. His son Henri was a Lifeguard at the Flat Rock pool.
Thank you to Madeleine Mathieu Wilson, his daughter, for sharing this incredible honor with our group! What follows is a summary of his exploits.

A multi-talented athlete in the 1920s and 1930s, Wilfrid Mathieu was a Canadian champion in speed skating, snowshoeing and cycling.
Speed skating was his primary sport as an athlete before he extended his dedication into coaching and serving as an official and event organizer. Skating for the East Ottawa AC Speed Skating Club, he won the senior men’s 880-yard and three-quarter-mile races at the 1927 Canadian championships as a 17-year-old.
At age 72, he showed he hadn’t lost his magical touch on the ice, when he earned the bronze medal at the 1982 world senior citizen speed skating championships during Ottawa’s Winterlude.
His speed skating resume also shows many race victories in the United States as well as during the Spalding Cup, Brewer Cup and Rubenstein Cup competitions. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, his name entered the speed skating record books several times for new club, regional, provincial and national standards.
When he strapped on the snowshoes, Mathieu became a regional, provincial, national and world champion. He even won a 120-mile race between Ottawa and Montreal in 1930.
Racing for the Capital City Cycling Club, Mathieu excelled on the dirt track at Lansdowne Park and captured a Canadian championship race.
Mathieu, who also was recognized with awards in sailing, water polo and track and field, was a pillar in the Francophone sports community, serving as a director and instructor in swimming, cycling and skiing with l’Oeuvre de la Jeunesse d’Ottawa. | Mathieu, Wilfrid (I9562)

Grandfather of Sean (Christine), Philippe (Laura), Martin (Angele), Chris, Marianne, Jakob, Celeste and Simon. Great-grandfather of Kheana and Khloey. Predeceased by his sister Laura Emond. Madame veuve Arthur Landry nee Rosette Madere, decedait le mercredi 22 novembre dans un hopital local apre une courte maladie. Feu Mme Landry etait agee de 25 ans.
Elle laisse pour pleurer sa perte son pere et sa mere, M. et Mme Dominique Madere: un fils Theodore d'Ottawa; sa belle-mere Mme Theodore Landry: deux belles-soeurs, Mme Charles St-Germain et Mlle Esther Landry, ainsi qu'un beau-frere, M. Charles St-Germain.
Les funerailles auront lieu samedi. Le cortege funebre quittera la residence mortuaire 62 rue Beechwood ou la defunte est exposee a 7 h .45 pour se rendre a l'eglise Ste-Anne ou le service sera chante a 8 heures. L'Inhumation se fera au cimetiere Notre-Dame d'Ottawa. Le Droit offre la famille en deuil ses plus sinceres condoleance.

La famille Bouthotte a le regret de vous annoncer le décès de Yolande Groulx Bouthotte survenu le 23 septembre 2021, l’âge de 85 ans. Elle était l'épouse de feu Walter Bouthotte et la fille de feu William Groulx et de feu Maria Lauzon. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : André (Ann), Louise (Ronald), Denise (Daniel) et Pierre (Jeannine); ses petits-enfants : Stéphane (Valérie), Mélanie (Michel), Stéphanie (Marc-André), Casendra (Alex), Pierre Jr (Geneviève) et Carolane (Christopher); ses dix arrière-petits-enfants et une arrière-arrière-petite-fille; sa soeur Carmen ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces, cousin(e)s et ami(e)s. Elle fut prédécédée par ses fils : Denis et Jean-Marie, sa petite-fille Julie ainsi que plusieurs frères et soeurs.
Une célébration de sa vie, en présence des cendres, aura lieu le samedi 16 octobre 2021 14 h la COOPÉRATIVE FUNÉRAIRE DE L’OUTAOUAIS située au 95, boul. Cité-des-Jeunes Gatineau (secteur Hull) en toute intimité familiale et sur invitation seulement.

Yolande Legros

C'est avec regret que nous vous annonçons le décès de Madame Yolande Legros. Notre chère Yolande devait déménager en août prochain dans une nouvelle résidence, elle nous a plutôt quittés le 5 juillet pour sa dernière demeure. Elle aurait eu 71 ans en novembre.
Elle laisse dans le deuil ses sœurs, Rita (Jean-Pierre Querry) et Marie-Paule Tremblay, et son frère Roger (Claire Sangster). Elle ira rejoindre ses chers parents, Gédéon et Éliane Legros, ses sœurs, Raymonde (feu Alfred Gauthier), Patrica et Bernadette ainsi que ses frères Jean-Pierre (Claudette Renaud) et Michel O.M.I. Elle laisse aussi plusieurs nièces et neveux. Elle manquera toute sa grande famille de Mon Chez Nous, spécialement ses amis Nicolas et Daniel.
Afin de respecter les consignes gouvernementales sur la COVID-19, seules les personnes invitées personnellement par la famille pourront être présentes aux funérailles qui auront lieu, le samedi 31 juillet 2021 14 h la COOPÉRATIVE FUNÉRAIRE DE L’OUTAOUAIS située au 1369, boul. La Vérendrye Ouest Gatineau.
