Sr. Denise Labonté, MHSH
Sr. Denise Labonté, a member of the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart since 1979,
died on March 18, 2022, at Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore County. She was 87 years
old.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, she joined the Grey Nuns of the Cross in 1953 and was
assigned to the United States in 1955. She taught in Catholic schools in Massachusetts
and New York for 15 years. She made a formal request to transfer to the Mission Helpers
of the Sacred Heart in 1978 and was granted permanent transfer in 1980.
Her 42 years as a Mission Helper focused on ministries in teaching and training teachers
as Directors of Religious Education in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, New
York and Maryland, where she also served as a Foster Grandparent at a maternity home
In 2013 Sr. Denise moved to Fatima House, a Catholic Charities Senior Living facility in
Baltimore City, where she helped create a Scripture Group, a Reflection Group, and a
pastoral care ministry for fellow residents.
She held a bachelor’s degree in Education as well as a certificate as a Master Teacher
from Rivier University in Nashua, New Hampshire.
She is survived by her sisters, Giselé Mantha and Marie Clair Dorion; and her brothers,
Bernard Labonté and Marcel Labonté. Also survived by in-laws and numerous nieces and
nephews. Sr. Denise was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Labonté.
Funeral Mass Monday, March 28, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima parish, 6400
Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, MD., 21224.
