Denis Labelle, 50, of Sandy Beach was killed and Norman Booth, 58, of Braeside was injured, after the van they were travelling in was struck by an Ottawa Valley Rail freight train Wednesday morning.
Police say the white 1991 GMC van was westbound on Usbourne Street at 8:16 a.m. when it was struck on the driver’s side by a Renfrew-bound train. The van was dragged several hundred metres down the track and ended up in the ditch in a heavily wooded area on the north side of the tracks.
The McNab-Braeside Fire Department dispatched 14 firefighters to the crash scene to help extricate both victims from the wreckage, while Arnprior helped out with five volunteers.
They were assisted by Renfrew County paramedics and Renfrew OPP.
Labelle was airlifted to the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital with life threatening injuries and pronounced dead later in the morning. Police say an autopsy has been ordered.
Booth, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken by land ambulance to Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to Ottawa with non life threatening injuries.
No one on the train was hurt.
The two men often worked together in a cleaning business and it is believed at the time of the accident Labelle was driving Booth home from a night job at an Arnprior store.
The crossing where the accident occurred is currently part of the detour put in place by the county while the bridge in Mansfield is being repaired.
The crossing is known for being particularly rough and at the bottom of a large hill with sharp turns immediately preceding the tracks.
Police had the road and track closed for the remainder of the day as accident investigators, including the Renfrew OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit and the Forensic Identification Unit, combed the scene for clues. The road was reopened at about 4:30 p.m. Const. Tina Hunt is the lead investigator.
